The initial plan was to write this post tomorrow, at the very earliest. However, I realized that I did not want this all-important post-perhaps the most relevant piece of writing ever to appear on this site-to lose its thunder the way my North Ams post did…a possibility which is made all the more likely by the fact that the subject which this blog focuses on has already performed at least twice more in various locations across North America (as part of their North American tour) since I saw them last Friday @.@

And the fact that Farhana has already uploaded her photos, and Azrap Hipni his insane blogpost-regarding the same subject matter-does not help my cause much. Therefore ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:

p2241782resized.jpg

Yes ladies and gentlemen, I watched Linkin Park at the Bell Center in Montreal last Friday=) And they were awesome.

Linkin Park (LP) was a band which I actually literally grew up listening to. I still remember my first taste of them-the six man band was first recommended to me back in Terengganu by my buddy Khairul Azfar-now a student of medicine at the University of Auckland in New Zealand-who insisted that I give them a go. I was a naive thirteen year old at that time, and boy bands were (admittedly) still reigning supreme in my auditory tastes. But all that changed the moment Azfar made me listen to One Step Closer, from the band’s Hybrid Theory album-a Y2K release.

And although I have jumped and shifted a lot in musical tastes since then-I admit I have found LP rather bland in comparison to other bands like Incubus, Switchfoot and Metallica-these good ol’ sounds of nu-metal were the things which were slowly trickling into my head the moment I arrived at Azrap, Farah and Anem’s abode in Montreal.

(and by the way, special thanks to the wonderful McGill trio which put Farhana, Fong Yi, and myself up at their place-you will get your own post soon!!=D…hahaha, nampak gaya the Debatathon gets pushed back again XD + @.@)

The stadium gates opened at 6.30pm, (we were there by 6.10 lol!!) and by 7.00pm, Chiodos-the opening act for the concert-had hit the stage. They were followed soon after by another American band…whose name I have forgotten-I don’t blame myself for this as they HAD overstayed their welcome by playing a unnecessarily HUGE amount of poorly arranged songs.

Of the two, I enjoyed Chiodos, “the baby-band” (quoting their vocalist here) more for their cleaner style and fantastic emo-screamo-but-I-can-do-rock-too vocalist. Hope you guys make it big someday.

After the opening acts had left the stage, the four of us who had come for the concert-Azrap, Farhana, Fong Yi and myself-began a long, patient wait for the people behind Minutes To Midnight. 8.00pm rolled by, and all we had to watch were handymen lifting stage blocks around and camera crews testing their panning. By 8.20 were were already getting restless. And we weren’t alone-even the soul of the crowd got bored and began doing repeated instances of the Mexican Wave to amuse itself. But even the novelty of seeing hundreds of random bodies fling their arms up into the air and cheer loudly wore off after a while.

dscn0361resized.jpg

Just about the time we were getting bored.

8.45pm-and a few hurried toilet trips later-but still no sign of LP. Fana, Azrap and I began a game of guessing which song they would play first; I decided that it would definitely be Given Up, while the latter two somehow unanimously decided on the powered riffs of No More Sorrow.

Then the stage went dark, and we quickly realized that all of our guesses were wrong. In the dim lighting we could just make out the outlines of two platforms slowly being raised upwards from under the stage; then the lifts hit the home deck-the crowd was wild by then-and the strobe lights went crazy.

Red, blue, yellow and white everywhere.

More shadows-then the silhouette of a guitar and the outline of a head with insanely tangled hair-a spotlight shone on a piano set right in the middle of the stage; it had been hidden by the gloom-then the drumset with its huge embossed logos came into view. A lean figure holding a mike walked to the frontispiece just as the piano began playing-

Linkin Park had decided to open with What I’ve Done-the drum set began thundering through increasingly louder beats, just the way it was heard on radio, but with the treble booster on the sub woofers one usually has at home replaced with raw energy. The crowd lost its head completely. I was rooted to my seat, completely unsure of how to react-should I stand; should I start screaming; should I jump and start singing along? Or should I just sit back and enjoy the show-a symbol of complete objectivity?

The band on stage had no such reservations with regard to their performance’ track listing-immediately after the last note of What I’ve Done echoed out, the faint synth hums of Faint from their 2003 Meteora album began searing the airwaves. I held myself back still-I wasn’t really sure if I was supposed to be there at the Bell Centre yet. Then halfway through the first verse Mike Shinoda rapped his way over to the stage corner nearest to where we were sitting, and as the neon strobes shone on him-illuminating every line of that famed MC’s face-only then did I realize who was it I was watching.

Frig, that really is Mike Shinoda over there.

So I lost my head too=) And just as well, as No More Sorrow was next in line-to not scream and yell when this song is being played live would have been an insult to my teenage years.

p2231709resized.jpg

Rocking In Montreal.

p2231707resized.jpg

The realization of how big this band had been to me in my teenage years arrived somewhere after the fifth song, when LP struck up a chord which was so very familiar to me-but I just could not place it. How familiar? I tapped my hands at the right places for the drums in the opening montage, mimed the turntable spins on my lap to within milliseconds of Joe Hahn’s thirty feet below me, timed the guitar chords-even sang the entire opening verse without even knowing the title of the song spewing out of my lips…and only when we got halfway into the chorus did I realize it was actually Somewhere I Belong, the first single off the band’s sophomore effort Meteora. Instantly memories of my Form 3 years came flooding back-nights spent poring over the album’s worn sheet lyrics under sack blankets in RMC, weeks of sharing the earphones on my father’s Walkman, evenings spent singing the songs out loud-in order-as we ran down for evening games at the school field…

A Wake-Given Up combo followed a rendition-powerful as I can ever remember-of Lying From You. Mike Shinoda-a true professional entertainer if there ever was one-then proceeded to work up the crowd, demanding for some more noise and passion from an already roaring Montreal audience. Just as he had gotten enough, he got the crowd to raise their hands with him (mine went up too-both of them actually), had us all swing them left-once, twice-

*first swing* “It’s like this y’all-” *second swing* “-FORFEIT THE GAME BEFORE SOMEBODY ELSE TAKES YOU OUT OF THE FRAME-!!!

p2231730resized.jpg

Just brilliant!!! =’D

The same degree of innovation was witnessed again in the performance of Bleed It Out-as the song segued into the two separate guitar sections, Rob Bourdon treated us to this amazing drum solo-check it out here=)

I even have a photo!=D

p2231739resized.jpg

The Solo-all eyes on Rob.

After Bleed It Out, the lights dimmed and the band disappeared for a while, allowing the roar of the crowd to power down into a steady rumble. When the lights came on again, only Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington were on stage; Chester standing, Mike seated behind a piano-said instrument was also draped with a Quebec flag, which I tell you, brought a LOT of noisy support from the massed Quebecois thronged there. Then the overheads dimmed again-setting the scene for a softer and more pensive mood-just as Shinoda began playing.

p2231745resized.jpg

About to begin the slow section-note the Fleur de Lis of Quebec in the background.

dscn0388resized.jpg

Well Into It-My December.

We then heard Hybrid Theory’s My December, which coincidentally was my favourite song choice every time my birthday rolled around for at least two years running=’) The duo gave a excellent performance, and came at just the right time when the crowd had had an ample serving of power metal; it was also the first time I had heard the song played to a piano as well. Another slow number-Shadow Of The Day-followed and was then backed up by the Reanimation version of Crawling [Krwling] which featured a lot of fancy work by Joe Hahn. Then the band decided that that was enough, and brought the metal back for Valentine’s Day, Numb, From The Inside and In The End, the latter of which was the classic LP song of all time.

p2231755resized.jpg

p2231760resized.jpg

Some bands are awesome on their CD…and then suck live; My Chemical Romance is a strong case in point for this. I was initially very afraid that LP would fall under this group of bands as well; but trust me on this, they don’t. In fact, they sound BETTER live as performers; this is where their lack of heavy riffs and drumwork plays in their favour, as it actually allows the band to constantly tweak their songs and actually entertain the audience as opposed to just serving them a goulash of hard and senseless banging.

dscn0384resized.jpg

(I like this photo btw=D)

The rout of sentimentalism ended with a heavy performance of Breaking The Habit, which culminated with Chester enunciating the final word of the song-”Tonight…” before raising his hand in a salute, saying “Goodnight”, and walking offstage with the rest of his band. It was a strange ending to an otherwise perfect night-the crowd’s cheers were still in the air; heck, even Azrap and myself were still standing and screaming ourselves hoarse.

There was a buzz of confusion in the air. Was it over? Chester had said “Goodnight”… A few people began traipsing towards the exits. The four of us just stared at each other blankly in our seats, not wanting to affirm that the night was over. The unmouthed question began appearing on our faces, and maybe…just a dash of utter disappointment?

Then we heard the slow guitar riff wafting up from the annals of the stage. Brad Delson wandered up, strumming the all-too-familiar motif of A Place For My Head; the crowd went bonkers again at the enticement of an encore. Phoenix appeared again with the bassline, and the two vocalists jumped into the verses of said track with gusto. The song did not end as it did on the album; instead it fired straight into the main riff of One Step Closer-

p2231761resized.jpg

It was then that the recollections ran to their very end:

Listening to Forgotten in the middle of the night as I worked steadily on my LOTF novels;

Singing Crawling out loud with Azfar on our evening bicycle rides back in 2001;

Scrambling across three classrooms to Nabil’s Walkman when Somewhere I Belong went on hitz.fm for the first time;

Betting Ong Ben Leon that From The Inside would be the final single off Meteora;

Listening to What I’ve Done for the first time on Adib’s laptop-

-and doubts of whether it was wise to spend three days of my reading break with strangers in Montreal.

It was all cleared, this was the climax of years of listening to Linkin Park; and it ended with me knowing that the trip was worth every bit of indecision.

Finishing their encore, LP began a salute of the stadium, tossing mementos to the crowd, waving and bowing to all four corners of the stadium-

dscn0390resized.jpg

dscn0391resized.jpg

The Final Salute.

The four of us filed out with the rest of the Montreal crowd. As we left, I exchanged high-fives with Farhana and Azrap-truly, I have to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for asking me to come along with you guys; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience never to be had again, and I thank you for making it that extra dash more meaningful=)

Exhilarated, relaxed, happy, satisfied-that was how all four of us felt, and for good reason. It was an awesome night never to be forgotten.

*DISCLAIMER: Not all of the photos/videos here belong to the author-I thank Azrap Hipni for providing some of the brilliant shots which I have reused here. I assume we are all square…as seeing you DID use mine in YOUR blogpost=p

And To Linkin Park: you guys have truly been a part of my years of growing up, so thanks for the seven years of awesome music. You guys have your faults (I will never forgive you guys for producing In Between=p) but at the end of the day, its the instances of meanings that count-those small pinpricks of life, those little things that give you away, from the top to the bottom, and from the inside ;) Although I have long outgrown your trademark sound, there will always be that feeling of homecoming each time any of your songs come on, and this is an instance that will never go away-

I will even run a certain age-old hazard: that of trying to introduce you to my children someday.

Which, if anything, is a salutation.

p2241788resized.jpg

I end with the lyrics of the LP song which I am listening to right now:

“I don’t know what’s worth fighting for, or why I have to scream-
But now I have some clarity…to show you what I mean.”
-Breaking The Habit, Meteora.

…watching Linkin Park: Live in Montreal in two hours.

=D

Footnote: The concert was a blast-will be blogging about it very soon.

Okay, I lied through my teeth when I said the next post was about the EDS 24 Hour Debatathon.

I decided to do this one first=)

Friends, this is a random photopost which compiles pictures which I have taken of/in Ottawa since I first got here on the 30th of August. When I say “random”, it means that there is no clear theme to the photos you are about to see-they may be on people, they may be on Ottawa, they may be of random park benches collapsing under the weight of the snow; senang citer semua benda pun boleh jalan lah.

And when I say “photopost” I mean photos kot ;)

May this post provide some insight to the life I lead, and my stay at a foreign country that I love =)

Ca part d’ici.

Okay, prepare yourself for one helluva outdated blogpost >.<

(and I like that Carleton motto btw=D)

This post is about the 2008 North American Debating Championships, which actually happened the week after McGill’s Winter Carnival debate tournament…I think the Winter Carnival post happened more than a month ago @.@ My apologies; anyway, here we go:

The North American Debate Championships (NorthAms) is, as its name suggests, a debate tournament for universities of North America. The way I understand it, CUSID (the Canadian national debate society, so to speak) and APDA (zis belongs to ze Americans) takes turns to host the tournament at their respective countries every year.

It was Bates College in the States last year. So this year we go back to Canada. And guess where it was held?

p1261328resized.jpg

Yep, lucky me=p I get to go to North Ams for only 3 bucks (the price of an uOttawa-Carleton University busfare XD)

In keeping in line with themed team names-almost a tongue twister right there XD-the EDS chose to go with a theme which promoted our upcoming 24-hours-debatathon for charity (I think it is safe for me to say “see next post” at this conjecture). I can’t remember all the team names at this point (it HAS been a while >.<), but names like EDS Support The Cause and EDS 24 Hours of Debate were among them.

Four EDS teams were sent; returning participants from Winter Carnival included Yulia and Yolanda; the U of O’s 2007 Worlds team also reforged their partnership in this competition. Me? I was lucky enough to be placed with a solid debate pro for this tournament-John Sergeant (a Masters student at the U of O) and I were placed together as EDS 24 Hours of Debate. Before I delve into details of how we did at the tournament-as per standard operating procedures of this blog that is-I think I should first publicly concede that I think I did very badly at the tournament >.<

More analysis on the issue to follow later lol. We begin with random pictures of the tournament:

p1261331resized.jpg

Debaters and judges briefing-very wordy. I think that after the next picture I am going to attempt to explain the format of debating that was used in a bit. Note that the operative word is attempt.

p1261342resized.jpg

The innards of the debaters room in the Tory Building at Carleton University.

Okay, I’ll attempt to explain the format of NorthAms now. ASSUMING all readers are familiar with the original Canadian Parliamentary format, this is how it looks like:

1st Gov: 7 minutes + 3 minutes PMR (or 6-4 time split if the PMRE Option is taken)
1st Opp: 7 minutes (+ 3 minutes if the Split Rebuttal Option is taken)
2nd Gov: 7 minutes (somehow both AP and CP agree on this one haha)
2nd Opp: 10 minutes (or 7 minutes if the 1st Opp decides on Split Rebuttal)

Yeah, so you can see how many variations of a debate can occur @.@ And I haven’t even gotten around to explaining the scores yet-

p1261335resized.jpg

Here you have the Chief Adjudicator (Ian Freeman) with a representation of the marks’ correlation just behind him. Yes, at this point you are obliged to go @.@

And NorthAms was a straight motion tournament, with debatable resolutions given 15 minutes before the round was due to start…but that does not mean that absolutely no one will squirrel @.@ I didn’t hit a tupai-er myself, but the EDS team of Yolanda and Yulia did however-lucky me, I guess.

Anyway, the low down (as usual):

1st Round: TH Opposes Sex Offender Registration
Gov: EDS 24 Hours of Debate
Opp: York Two Cups

2nd Round: TH Prefers A Draft Over Stop Loss Orders
Gov: Army VM
Opp: EDS 24 Hours of Debate

3rd Round: THW Not Allow Ransom Insurance For Journalists
Gov: EDS 24 Hours of Debate
Opp: Harvard UnDeuxTrois Cat

4th Round: TH Supports Jury Nullification
Gov: EDS 24 Hours of Debate
Opp: RIT TT

5th Round: THBT Holocaust Denial Is Not Hate Speech
Gov: Queen’s Changing Positions
Opp: EDS 24 Hours of Debate

6th Round: TH Would Implement Capital Punishment (HA…HA…=p)
Gov: RIT TT
Opp: EDS 24 Hours of Debate

Final Results for EDS 24 Hours of Debate: 3 wins, 3 losses, 44th position overall.
Speaker Scores: (38.5 is again, a “good” speech) 38.0-38.5-37.5-39.0-37.0-37.5 for a 37.92 average, 115th overall.

It’s kinda obvious that things went wrong for John and myself from the word “GO”. We found ourselves 0-2 down after the first day, suffering ridiculous manners of defeat on both debates (I just sucked in Round 1-in front of Alex Amar wiwuwiwuwiwu=( and we crumbled to late pressure from Army VM in the second round) and having to spend all of day two playing catch-up to the other teams of the tournament. This we managed to a certain extent-note that we did hit a solid Queen’s team at one point in the fifth round, implying that we had made up significant ground on the failures of the past day and were back in the groove-

-but we blew all that momentum away with a HUGE defeat (margin FOUR @.@) to Robert Embree and Sheldon McCormick in that decisive round >.< Sigh…even a second overturning of RIT TT on my favourite motion couldn’t salvage the tournament for us=(

You know what, this actually sucks. I actually hate myself for where I am in terms of debating as of now >.< Why? Well, look at how far I’ve actually “progressed”; I think I am rotting away here in Canada >.< This personal feeling comes with good reason-not to brag, but when you’re actually coming from a debating career which includes two Malaysian National High School championship-winning runs, and being ranked top speaker on the Prime Minister’s Trophy tournament and also the IIUM Interschool tab (the only person in Interschool history to do it twice-ok this one is a brag=p + XD) AND managing to break to the quarterfinals at my first ever university level BP tournament-all while still in high school-(wave Atif Slim, WAVE!!=D) I think that I actually have an “obligation” to expect more of myself.

Ok fine, I don’t expect to break (obviously) or even be the best novice at tournaments; but I do demand of myself a greater degree of performance and maturity. I honestly feel I argued with WAY more conviction and strength in helping RMC Malaysia run of five consecutive national and state-level finals in 2004 to 2005 (this run was extended to eight tournaments into 2006 after my graduation from high school) and to feel that way, even after solid training from the EDS at the U of O, kinda sucks.

If I still had the national television recordings of the 2004 and 2005 Prime Minister’s Final to put up here, I would-and ask you to compare those performances to the pile of manure I seem to be producing these days.

I do want to be a better debater, I do want to achieve things.

But how the heck do I do that?! Maybe I need to put more time into things…spend more time at training sessions and ask even more questions. More reading would be good too…my friend, you are now canceling your Time’s subscription in favour of The Economist next year @.@

I have thought of all the reasons as to why I still suck-adaptation, new issues, Canadian-centric debate ideas not being identical to Malaysia’s…but IMHO, those are all lame and just don’t get me even an inch of saving grace-if you rreally are a good debater, you’d roll just about anywhere, right? Heck, I’ve done WC and Hart House BP (and arguably Guindon-swing team) so one would reasonably expect a change in capabilities, or at least a marked consistency. Have I produced that?

Hell no. I in fact think that my best performance so far in Canada was when I was part of one of three swing teams at Guindon-as Closing Opposition, Oscar and I managed to run a McGill team all the way down the wire to a close second place finish in our final round-a result which ironically, would have allowed us to break to Novice Finals-if we weren’t swingin’=p + XD But since then, downhill.

What do I bloody do?

I admit, I have no idea…help me =(

The NorthAms finals was held at The Mayfair-which I thought was a pretty unorthodox venue for a debate final as it was a actually thirty meters of THEATRE lol!! Complete with fake balustrades and everything so Rapunzel can let down her hair, and to give Juliet poetic license to ask Romeo where the bloody dingies art thou.

This picture was of Jason Rogers of Hart House against Harvard 123 Cat, which made it to the finals over Nick Shkordoff and Dash.

p1281417resized.jpg

Mark Samburg, Harvard 123 Cat.

The tournament was won by Hart House of the University of Toronto-manned by Jason Rogers and Jon Laxer-beating out Harvard 123 Cat, which in turn consisted of Mark Samburg and Kyle Bean. The motion for the final was actually based on a thought experiment (@.@) which went like this:

Let us assume that there’s this sick violinist in a hospital. He is very ill and dying; but one day however, a woman walks into the hospital, and through some freak accident finds herself attached to the violinist. Our sick violinist is in need of some unusual medication actually, and the woman being attached to him is actually the exact help he needs. Now, if the woman stays attached to the violinist for a year, the violinist will actually survive his whole medical ordeal; however, should the woman choose to leave, the violinist will die.

So it is under these circumstances, that This House Believes That The Woman Should Stay Attached To The Dying Violinist.

@.@ @.@ @.@

Arguments ranged from the obvious (moral obligation twists), to the exemplary (tangents were drawn to rape-pregnancy and abortion), to the downright hilarious (“what if the violinist is a kick-ass violinist?!!? We can’t lose him…”).

All in all, good stuff (not on my part though >.<) and Hart House were deserving winners.

Anyway, I end this post with the thought that I just hope I do a lot better at Dalhousie Nationals 2008…especially after the EDS has done a policy waiver for me so I can attend >.<

Sigh.

Now, the next post will be titled Deus Scientiarum Dominus Est ok?

=)

is here. And I am going to blog like nobody’s business =.=”

2.) EDS of the University of Ottawa 24-Hours Debatathon 2008
3.) Album review: Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, by the Foo Fighters.
4.) 22/02/2008 Linkin Park:Live In Montreal Concert Overview and Pictures (WOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!=D)
5.) EDS High School Tournament 2008

So be prepared! XD

And to the blogs that I haven’t visited/commented on in a bit: WATCH OUT.

XD

…how this blog appears to be turning into a running advertisement for the third The Black Mages album, Darkness and Starlight.

Anyway, the third arrangement has been announced, and it comes from the land of Zidane Tribal, Adelbert Steiner, Vivi Ornitier (the real Black Mage LOL), and Princess Garnet Til Alexandros…I am of course referring to Final Fantasy IX =)

ffixboxgv2.jpg

Again, I welcome the latest arrangement to the fray – this time, it is Assault of the Silver Dragons, which plays when uh…you get attacked by silver dragons XD Haha, to be more precise, I think it plays at the transition of Disc 3 to Disc 4, where your time-warping airship gets ambushed by said creatures.

Happy memories lol.

BUT however, I cannot comment on the arrangement of the song. Why? Well apparently, the teaser video that Dog Ear Records placed on their website is corrupted, and the video just hangs and stops when it reaches the part where said song gets its debut >.< All you see is the title of the song, its origin, and interestingly, who arranged it.

That honor goes to Arata Hanyuda, the drummer @.@

Taken from SquareEnix Music Online:

The Black Mages III Just One Disc After All

It was confirmed today that The Black Mages III ~Darkness and Starlight~ is a one disc album. This dismisses widespread speculation that the band’s third album would feature a second disc dedicated to Japanese mythology. It has also been confirmed that it will feature ten tracks, though only FFVII’s “Opening ~ Bombing Mission” has been announced as an arrangement so far.

I am very disappointed =’(

I think that this is a brilliant joke lol.

I wanna see how many actually get it ;) And also how long it takes lol.

Here goes:

A farmer had 3 beautiful daughters who were getting ready to go out on dates. The first beau came to the door and said, ”I’m Eddie, I’m here to pick up Betty. We’re going for spaghetti, is she ready?”

“No,” the farmer said.

The second beau came to the door and said, ”I’m Joe, I’m here to pick up Flo to take her to the show. Is she ready to go?”

“No.”

The third beau came to the door, saw the farmer, and began: ”Hello, my name is Chuck.”

The farmer shot Chuck.

HEH HEH HEH XD

Their second single is out.

And guess what-

I welcome “Premonition“, a track which was apparently mainly arranged by Tsuyoshi Sekito-their rhythm guitarist. Which is a tad surprising, as I was expecting Kenichiro Fukui to be the dalang.

And as a result, it’s VERY guitar-heavy @.@

Eh, what’s that? You guys don’t recognize the title of the track, or which part of FF VIII it comes from?

LOL.

It’s the one that plays when you hit the first tier of the end-game boss (the one where all your Guardian Forces get forcibly split from your avatars). :)

I’m glad that the second single is from FF VIII…cause it means that even Atif can recognize (and appreciate) it now!!=D
